Complete Guide to Anmeldung in Germany
"Anmeldung" (Address Registration) is the most critical first step for any newcomer in Germany. Without it, you do not officially exist in the system. It blocks you from opening a bank account, getting a mobile phone contract, setting up internet, or receiving your crucial Tax ID.
When do you need to register?
By German law (Bundesmeldegesetz), you must register your address within 14 days of moving into a new apartment or house. You are also required to do an "Ummeldung" (Re-registration) whenever you move from one apartment to another within Germany.
What is the "Wohnungsgeberbestätigung"?
Since 2015, simply showing up with a rental contract is not enough to complete your Anmeldung. The Bürgeramt strictly requires a Wohnungsgeberbestätigung. This is a special confirmation form signed by your "Wohnungsgeber" (provider of housing—usually your landlord or main tenant) confirming the exact date you moved in.
Some landlords don't have this form readily available. Use our tool above to download a legally compliant, blank PDF template of the Wohnungsgeberbestätigung. Print it out and hand it to your landlord to fill out and sign.
The Appointment Process
- Book an appointment: Go to the official website of your city (e.g., service.berlin.de or muenchen.de) and search for "Anmeldung" or "Wohnsitz anmelden". Appointments run out fast! Check early every morning for cancellations.
- Prepare documents: Gather your passport, visa (if applicable), the signed Wohnungsgeberbestätigung, and the fully filled out Anmeldeformular (which you can print from the city's website).
- Attend the Bürgeramt: The appointment usually takes 5-10 minutes. At the end, you will receive a stamped "Meldebescheinigung" (Registration Certificate). Guard this piece of paper safely; you will need it constantly in Germany!
