The New German Naturalization Law (2024)

In June 2024, Germany completely modernized its citizenship laws, known as the Staatsangehörigkeitsgesetz (StAG). The new reforms are designed to make naturalization faster and much more attractive for expats, permanently removing the ban on holding multiple passports.

Major Changes in the New Law

  • Universal Dual Citizenship: You no longer have to give up your home country's passport to become German. Multiple nationalities are officially tolerated for all expats.
  • 5-Year Standard Track: The required residency period has been cut down drastically from eight years to just five years.
  • 3-Year Fast Track: If you show incredible 'integration' (exceptional job success, volunteering) and pass a C1-level German language exam, you can apply after living in Germany for only three years.

Financial Autonomy is Key

While the new law makes timelines shorter, it explicitly tightened the financial rules. You must prove continuous employment and the ability to fully support yourself without any state welfare programs (like Bürgergeld, SGB II, or SGB XII). Exceptions apply for special hardship, but generally, a completely independent income is required.

Required Checklist for Naturalization

  • A valid passport and a secure residence permit (like a Blue Card or Niederlassungserlaubnis).
  • B1 Language Certificate from a recognized testing body (Goethe, Telc).
  • Certificate of passing the "Einbürgerungstest".
  • Proof of financial stability (last 3-6 payslips, tax returns).
  • No serious criminal record in Germany or abroad.
  • Active commitment to the free democratic basic order of the German Constitution.

Frequently Asked Questions

When did the new German Citizenship law pass?

The new Act on the Modernization of Nationality Law (StAG) came into force on June 27, 2024. It drastically changed naturalization rules.

Is dual citizenship allowed in Germany now?

Yes! Under the new 2024 law, the 'principle of avoiding multiple nationalities' has been dropped. You can keep your original passport while obtaining a German one. Dual citizenship is now universally permitted for all.

How many years do I need to live in Germany?

The standard residency requirement was reduced from 8 years to 5 years. With special integration achievements and C1 German, it can be reduced further to 3 years.

What counts as 'special integration achievements' for the 3-year track?

This includes exceptional performance at school or in a job, or sustained volunteer work. Providing a C1 language certificate is also mandatory for this track.

Do I need to pass a language test?

Yes. For the standard 5-year track, you must prove B1-level German. For the 3-year fast track, C1-level German is strictly required.

What is the 'Einbürgerungstest'?

It is a citizenship test containing 33 multiple-choice questions about German laws, history, and society. You must answer at least 17 correctly to pass.

Can I get Citizenship if I receive Bürgergeld (welfare)?

Generally, no. The new law tightened financial requirements. You must be able to support yourself and your dependent family members entirely without recourse to Bürgergeld or SGB II benefits.
